Engagement in make-believe or imaginative play is important for children’s development across all areas, including self-regulation. In social pretending, preschoolers engage in lengthier interactions, are more involved, draw more children into their activity, and are more cooperative. Four- and five-year olds who spend more time engaging in sociodramatic play tend to be more advanced in their intellectual development and are judged more socially competent by their teachers. This video focuses on the role and importance of play in self-regulation.
